Blackheath broker running marathon in honour of his friends

KIND-hearted insurance broker Mat McSwiggan is running in the London Marathon to raise money to help a charity after two friends died from sudden death syndrome, having had undetected heart defects.

It will be the first marathon run by the 33-year-old, of Beech Avenue, Blackheath, when he competes in next month’s world-famous event with his brother Kevin, aged 30, from Luton.

They hope to raise £3,200 for CRY Cardiac Risk in the Young which promotes heart screening, ECG testing programmes and medical research.

Mat’s friend Anjad Ali, from Halesowen, died aged 30, in 2008. They were friends while both were living in Peterborough and two years earlier another Peterborough friend of Mat’s died.

“I wanted to keep their names in lights and to make everyone aware of sudden death syndrome,” he said.

Matt, who is training hard on the treadmill at Haden Hill Leisure Centre, hopes to complete the marathon in four hours.

Anyone wishing to sponsor him can do so at www.justgiving.com/matthew-mcswiggan
