The fact is the current rate of 21p works. As an industry we need to focus on reassuring the public that solar still provides great returns. The current tariff of 21p/kWh for domestic schemes is
producing a sound Annual Return of up to 10%; thanks to the reduction in PV component prices - which is still guaranteed for 25 years and linked to inflation.

Offices to homes?

Over the last week there has been much publicity with regard to the housing shortage in the West Midlands and judging by the volume of rented accommodation that Doolittle & Dalley have let so
far this year, the demand for rented accommodation seems to be unprecedented. With reports that house prices are equivalent to nine times average earnings, then it is not surprising that many
people who years ago would have been purchasing their own property are now having to rent rather than buy.

The Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) and KPMG Report on Jobs released last week showed the good news that permanent staff placements increased for the third month in a row. The IT
and computing sector is leading the upturn in permanent job vacancy growth. Overall demand for staff strengthened in March, as the number of vacancies available to job seekers rose at the fastest
pace since July 2011. Starting salaries awarded to permanent hires were broadly unchanged in March whilst temporary staff/contractors pay rose modestly – likely to be in line with the AWR
 requirements.

Well it’s Spring – budget time and the end of the first quarter with an avalanche of reports and statistics to digest – the Bank of England’s summary of business conditions, which we contribute
too, shows confirmed continued growth in Consumer demand and further signs of improvement in the housing market. Manufacturing and the industrial sector are improving, we are experiencing an
increase in enquiries for industrial and commercial property and for the first time in a few years we are looking for new accommodation for manufacturing / workshops including new build or design
and build opportunities. These are in our area and a clear sign of companies looking to expand and consolidate their property requirements.

Being brave in business, trying new ways of doing things that stand out from the crowd to grab the attention of potential customers is nothing new. Businesses like Virgin, who have taken on large,
established companies in a given sector and then rewritten the rules, usually in favour of the customer. ‘Innocent’ whose brand Innocent drinks has captured the imagination of their consumers and
who also choose to give 10% of all profits to charity through the ‘Innocent Foundation’, organisations like these differentiate themselves and have an unshakeable belief in what they stand for.

As the economy begins to recover, employees are more likely to consider their options and seek alternative opportunities available to them in the marketplace. There has been plenty of research
about the financial implications of attrition, losing good people shows on the bottom line. If a good manager leaves, it can cost five times the salary package and up to ten times for a director.
Apart from the obvious direct costs of recruitment, training and management time, the indirect cost of disruption to business in terms of reduced productivity, customer relationships, motivation,
morale and seepage of knowledge are considerable.
