Kings labour but still win
11:10am Saturday 13th March 2010
KINGSWINFORD Hockey Club laboured to a 2-0 victory against a stubborn Yardley team in the BodyKraft League West Midlands Two game.
The league leaders, already missing five regular players, had to start the match without a goalkeeper as Tim Sanders was running 20 minutes late.
However, Kings pressed high-up the pitch and were rewarded for their hard work when Matt Edwards courageously touched home a through ball.
Edwards clashed with the on rushing Yardley Keeper and needed first aid for a face wound and was taken to hospital for treatment.
Daman Johal neatly slotted home the second just before the break and though Kings could have increased the lead in the second period, their efforts were too often off target. The second team made a flying start at West Bromwich, going two up in the first five minutes through Richard Turner and Ravi Johal, after their opponents keeper arrived five minutes late.
However, the arrival of the West Brom goalkeeper saw a change in the shape and tempo of the game with the opposition launching wave after wave of attacks.
Kings’ defence was breached twice in before half-time and they could not stem the flow in the second half, eventually going down 5-2.
The third team lost 3-0 at home to Walsall.
