Old Hales hammer rivals
1:50pm Friday 12th March 2010
OLD Halesonians Hockey Club enjoyed a superb weekend double as they thumped Shrewsbury 7-1 and then beat Old Wulfrunians.
Shrews had beaten Hales 5-1 earlier this season but that never looked like being repeated after Graham Knight put them ahead inside two minutes.
Old Hales kept possession well, and the second and third goals came from Chris Whiley and Josh Randhawa respectively.
They continued their scoring shortly into the second half, with two quick goals from Tom Bulteel.
Mark Curzon hit the sixth before Shrewsbury netted a consolation and Doug Hougthton completed the rout.
They followed it up with another home win as they swept aside Old Wulfrunians 4-2.
Paul Harrold and Chris Whiley put Hales two up and Harry Hughes added a third shortly after the break.
Old Wulfs pulled one back but Chris Perry restored the three goal advantage, before the visitors netted again late on.
But there was disappointment for the seconds, who lost 3-2 to Hampton in Arden.
Old Hales quickly found themselves two goals behind after some slack defending but were given hope when Damien Shackleton converted a short corner just before half-time.
Poor defending saw the hosts go 3-1 ahead before Shackleton netted again, though it proved only a consolation.
Promotion is still in the seconds hands provided they win their remaining three games.
The Badgers drew 1-1 with West Bromwich, Michael Lynn grabbing a second half equaliser.
