Family success for fencing club
10:20am Friday 27th January 2012
STOURBRIDGE Fencing Club kicked off 2012 with plenty of family success.
Emma Potter won gold in the women’s sabre at the Cambridge Open to climb into the top 20 in the national rankings, while husband Steve took fifth place in the men’s competition.
In the men’s sabre Steve is currently ranked 56th in the country, just ahead of club-mate Peter Baron who is three places further back.
Baron, who turns 70 this year, is also the third ranked veteran in the country and capped off a string of impressive recent results by qualifying for October’s World Championships at the BVF qualifying event Baron lost his first fight but comfortably won the rest to snare a silver medal.
It was a similar story for his wife Janet, who lost her first fight against rival Moya McNamarra but was perfect from then on. She met McNamarra again in the final where her rival once again came out on top but the silver medal was enough to book Baron’s own place at the world championships, which are held in Krem, Austria.
Elsewhere, there was disappointment for Stourbridge’s John Morris who failed to repeat his victory of last year and therefore is yet to qualify.
He will get another chance to make the world tournament in Austria at the BVF National Championships in March.
