Midland champ Welborn set for TV bow

10:10am Saturday 18th February 2012

ROWLEY Regis welterweight Jason Welborn is poised for a surprise television debut when he defends his Midlands title.

The 25-year-old makes the first defence of his crown against Coventry’s James Flinn at Wolverhampton Civic Hall on March 23.

And the fight will now be broadcast live on Frank Warren’s subscription TV channel BoxNation, after the British cruiserweight showdown between former WBO and European champion Enzo Maccarinelli and holder Shane McPhilbin was added to the top of the bill.

Welborn impressed in his three round knockout of Sean McKervey back in November, which was shown live on YouTube and he is delighted at the extra exposure his next contest will be getting.

He said: “I only found out the fight is going to be on BoxNation at the weekend and it’s great news.

“I’ve been in the game a long time now and need to be getting on with things.

“This is the kind of show I need to be on in order to build my profile.

“I don’t want to be fighting people who I know I can beat easily. I want tough fights. That is what people want to see.”

Warren will now co-promote the show with PJ Rowson, who put together the original card which includes Stourbridge light-welterweight Steven Pearce and Brierley Hill’s Kyle Spencer.

Dudley featherweight Dean Anderson is also set for the Civic show, after a 15-month break from the sport, while Halesowen’s Saquib ‘Zak the Ripper’ Amir is another familiar face on the bill.

Tickets for the show are available by calling the box office on 0870 3207000 or PJ Rowson on 07976 283157.
